Language and Communication

Communication Approach

We recognise the importance of varied communication styles and believe in a 'Child-Centred Communication' approach and we support the development of both English and British Sign Language.  This involves using a combination of spoken and written English, British Sign Language (BSL), signed supported English (SSE) and signed English (SE), to meet the individual needs of each child.

 

Our ultimate aim is for children to be confident, competent communicators within their preferred mode of communication.

Speech and Language Therapy

We work closely with Provide Speech and Language Therapists, who specialise in working with deaf children and visit the Resource Base weekly.  Using our on-site therapy room, children work either 1:1 or in small groups to develop speech, listening and communication skills, to achieve targets generated in collaboration between parents, therapists and school staff.

British Sign Language

For children who use signing to communicate and to access the curriculum, regular tuition is provided by an Essex BSL Tutor, with whom we work closely.  As with Speech and Language, children may work either 1:1 or in small groups to develop sign vocabulary, expressive and receptive skills.  As their skill develops, children in the upper school may have the opportunity to begin their BSL Level 1 qualification.
